Summary[edit | edit source]
Caroline goes into a tailspin and brings Max into the mix when Nicolas tells her he's going to leave his wife for her.
Plot[edit | edit source]
Han announces that it's the diner's spring cleaning. Caroline weasels out by pretending to have carpal tunnel syndrome, while wearing a wrist brace left by a customer. Max feigns an obscure injury to avoid the cleaning. While Caroline is in the back, Nicolas arrives and asks Max about her. Max covers by saying Caroline's not there, and he leaves. Afterwards, Caroline admits to being attracted to Nicolas, but is firm about not getting involved with a married man. She texts him that she'll only be with him if he leaves his wife.
At pastry school, Caroline does her level best to avoid Nicolas, but is unsuccessful. He announces that he really is leaving his wife for her. At the diner Caroline tells Max that she never expected Nicolas to take it seriously, that she doesn't want to break up his marriage. Oleg overhears this and assures her that Nicolas isn't really going through with it, that it's just a ploy to get Caroline to sleep with him. Oleg proudly boasts that he's used such tactics on countless other women. Caroline then receives a text from Nicolas that he'll be breaking up with his wife the next day. She and Max assume that he'll be doing this over Skype, as they communicate regularly that way. Han makes another appeal to the girls to help with the diner spring cleaning. Caroline replies that she's too busy ruining someone's marriage, and decides that she must tell Nicolas face to face that she doesn't want to do that.
Max and Caroline go to Nicolas's loft. Caroline implores Nicolas not to break up with his wife over Skype. He replies that he won't. Caroline's relief is short lived when he announces that his wife is physically present in the complex's lobby; he's breaking up with her in person. Caroline insists that she doesn't want to be the whore he's leaving her for. Nicolas accuses Caroline of leading him on the whole time, but Max firmly rebuffs this. The wife arrives at the door of Nicolas's place; he becomes frantic, that he must stay with his wife if Caroline isn't going to be with him. Caroline suggests that he simply tell the truth, that nothing happened between them. He says that she wouldn't believe it, as he has a history of womanizing. He hustles the girls into the bathroom and then goes to answer the door.
Max and Caroline have become frantic themselves, as there's no place to hide in the bathroom, and undetected escape through the front door is impossible with the wife present. Nicolas returns to the bathroom and advises the girls to escape through the bathroom window. The only downside to this is that the bathroom is many stories above ground. Nicolas explains that the window ledge is wide enough for them to edge along to reach a stairway, a feat accomplished by a previous object of his womanizing. Caroline agrees to try it only after he makes a final appeal to Caroline to be with him. Max is appalled but soon finds herself on the ledge with Caroline, hundreds of feet up, in the pouring rain to boot. As they edge along, a terrified Caroline whimpers that she can't die, as she hasn't yet made her comeback. She gestures towards a townhouse she dreams of owning, and in the process overbalances. A panicked Max yanks her back, and the two crash backwards through another of Nicolas's windows. Both he and his wife run into the room, where he unconvincingly acts as if he's never seen them before in his life.
The scene cuts to Max and Caroline arriving at the diner, wearing neck braces as the result of whiplash from their fall. They tell the story to Earl, who is glad they survived as he wouldn't know what to do without them (he quietly tells Max he meant just her). Han reacts to the sight of them as the girls who cried wolf too many times; not believing their injuries are real this time, rips off their braces. Ouch!
